Viettel earns amazing growth in Tanzania
PANO – Halotel, the subsidiary of the Vietnamese Military Industry and Telecommunication Group (Viettel) in Tanzania, currently has 3.8 million subcribers and occupies 10 percent of the local market.
Since its initial operation in 2015, Halotel has left behind 3 telecoms suppliers to become the fourth leading company in this field in the East African country. This was stated in a report of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). Previously, Halotel ranked the seventh in this market and the jump of three places demonstrates the drive and outlook of this company.

Thanks to its fast development, Halotel was honored with the award in the "Fastest-Growing Company of the Year in the Middle East and Africa" category at the 2017 International Business Awards - Stevie Awards held in Barcelona, Spain.
After three months of operation from October 2016, the number of Halotel subscribers reached 1 million and the figure reached 2 million six months later. This was the fastest growth rate of users among markets in which Viettel has invested, either in Vietnam and/or in foreign markets. This is a record growth rate that few telecoms suppliers in the world could imagine in their first year of operation.
The report also highlighted a decrease of 0.22 percent in the number of telecoms users last year in comparison with the same period in 2016. Thus, the positive growth of Halotel has proved the sound business policies of the Vietnamese telecoms group in this east African country.
As for e-payments, TCRA also noted a growth of Halotel with its product HaloPesa. Accordingly, Halotel’s service has achieved 1 million users in February 2018.
Tanzania is one of the leading countries in applying e-payment in the world. At present, the country has over 40 million people using e-payment, with more than 95 million transactions a month (totally worth around USD 1.6 billion). Additionally, 32 percent of Tanzania’s population uses e-cash daily, while only 2 per cent has banking accounts. As a result, HaloPesa is among the favorite mobile payment systems in Tanzania, showing Halotel’s effective investment over the past two years.
