It was an important step for the company to officially commercialize the 5G network and also a milestone to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Viettel’s official operation of mobile services.

Viettel becomes first operator to operate the 5G SA network.

Reportedly, in just over 3 months since the Ministry of Information and Communications granted Viettel the license to use the frequency to commercialize the 5G network, Viettel has become the first unit in Vietnam to successfully operate the 5G SA network.

Unlike the 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) network developed on the 4G network infrastructure, the 5G SA network is a more advanced and completely independent version that helps improve flexibility, scalability and provision of many new services. Thus, Viettel's deployment of the 5G SA network promises to provide a variety of attractive services for both individual and corporate customers.

To operate the 5G SA network, apart from the investment of a large amount of money in a new core network system, network operators have had to face the biggest challenge that the configuration to connect this system to wireless devices must comply with 5G standards. In the world, it usually takes 1 to 2 years for network operators to complete the construction of a commercial 5G SA network.

According to the GSA report, by the end of the first quarter of 2024, only 58 out of 175 countries that are commercializing or testing the 5G network have successfully tested the 5G SA network. The main reason is that operating the 5G SA network is more difficult and complicated than the 5G NSA network.

With their all-out efforts, in a short time, Viettel engineers have successfully deployed and integrated important services, such as data, voice on the 5G network, messaging, and more. This makes Viettel become the first network operator in Vietnam to complete the deployment of the 5G SA network.

Since its announcement of the first call on the 5G NSA network in May 2019, Viettel has once again affirmed its mission of taking the lead in deploying the latest and most advanced technologies in the world to domestic customers.

Currently, Viettel is closely coordinating with major smartphone manufacturers, popular in the Vietnamese market, such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo to upgrade commercial firmware for smartphone devices with the 5G SA network.
