Viettel and VNPT win auctions for 5G spectrum licenses
PANO - The Ministry of Information and Communication has granted licenses to the Military Industry-Telecom Group (Viettel) and the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) to establish public ground-based mobile telecommunications networks using 5G technology.
Earlier, the Ministry of Information and Communications organized an auction for 4G/5G bands. As a result, Viettel won the bid to secure the right to use radio frequencies for the B1 band block (2,500-2,600 MHz) for its 5G network over the next 15 years, while VNPT won the bid for the C2 frequency band block (3,700-3,800 MHz).

According to the Department of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Information and Communications, with the successful auction, the ministry has officially granted licenses for the establishment and provision of 5G terrestrial mobile services starting from April 11, 2024. Thanks to that, businesses can expedite the commercialization of 5G services nationwide in 2024. This will establish a new infrastructure that promotes the development of the digital economy, digital society, and digital government in Vietnam.

Speaking at the license-granting ceremony, Viettel Chairman and General Director Major General Tao Duc Thang affirmed that Viettel is determined to officially provide 5G services to users in 2024 and enhance infrastructure for 4G. He emphasized that the 5G network will be one of the crucial digital infrastructure elements to drive digital transformation.

According to Chairman of the Board of Directors of VNPT To Dung Thai, the license serves as the foundation for businesses to deploy 5G services to customers and serve the national digital transformation.
