At the ceremony

Politburo member and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan attended the event.

At the ceremony, the organizing panel announced the State President’s decisions on bestowing posthumously the title “Hero of the People’s Armed Forces” on martyr Dong Quoc Binh, a soldier of Regiment 171 (present Brigade 171 of Naval Region 2), conferring the title on Nguyen Huu Phuoc, former captain of Ship 69 of Unit 125 (present Brigade 125 of Naval Region 2) and Pham Xuan Sanh, former commander of Team 179 of Naval Commando Unit 126 (present Team 3 of Naval Commando Brigade 126). The title awards are in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the resistance war against the US imperialists for national salvation.

The organizer also announced the Prime Minister’s decision on recognizing Ship HQ-671, a military cargo ship at the Naval Museum, as a national treasure.

On the strategic Ho Chi Minh trail at sea, Ship HQ-671 transported nearly 400 tons of weapons and goods to wharves of Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau as well as carried cadres to South Central coastal provinces, contributing to the reinforcement to the Southern theater.

Especially, during the General Offensive and Uprising in Spring 1975, the ship directly transported weapons and troops to the Truong Sa Archipelago. The ship has twice received the title “Hero of the People’s Armed Forces” by the Party and the State.

Addressing the event, Nguyen Thien Nhan expressed the admiration for and gratitude to heroes and fallen soldiers with brave combats and sacrifice and to Ship HQ-671’s troops who were courageous, resilient, clever and creative to achieve excellent feats-of-arms in the anti-US resistance war for national salvation. Nhan stressed that they are bright examples of revolutionary heroism for troops and people to respect and follow.
