Military unit disposes of tons of war-left bombs and mines
PANO - Over eight tons of bombs and mines left behind from the war, found in the provinces of An Giang, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Kien Giang and Dong Thap, were disposed by Engineering Brigade 25 of Military Zone 9, on May 24 at the Chi Lang firing range.
Deputy Chief of the Staff Department of the brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quoc Khanh, said that the collection and deactivation of the explosives are planned to be conducted from May 10 to 28.
Accordingly, the brigade has unearthed 60 bombs weighing between 100 and 1,000 pounds and 39 mines of various kinds.
This second large-scale collection and disposal of war-left unexploded ordnance in the year have encountered many difficulties due to bad weather in the Southwestern region, causing muddy roads and most of the explosives found in remote areas.
In addition, many huge bombs, with intact fuses, posed a serious danger to troops while defusing and transporting them. Notably, there was a 1,000-pound bomb carried by hand for over 1 kilometer along a coastal forest.
Previously, the brigade disposed of over 18 tons of bombs and mines of various kinds.
