In the morning, the U.S. mobilized 131 sorties of tactical aircraft to attack the battlefields of the Air Defense - Air Force Service in the inner city and the suburbs of Hanoi. At night, the enemy sent around 60 sorties of B-52s to raid Dong Anh, Da Phuc (now Soc Son), Duong Bridge, Yen Vien, and Gia Lam.
Pilot Vu Xuan Thieu received an order to fly a MiG-21 to take off from Cam Thuy airport (Thanh Hoa province) to Son La province. After detecting a B-52, he approached and shot down it in a close distance. Unfortunately, pilot Vu Xuan Thieu sacrificed his life.
On the whole day of December 28, the Vietnamese troops and people in the North shot down three U.S. aircraft, including two B-52s.
