Military builds schools in Gia Lai border areas

PANO - Over the past two months, hundreds of officers and soldiers from the Gia Lai provincial Armed Forces, Army Corps 34, and Division 2 (Military Region 5) have assisted localities in accelerating the construction of inter-level primary and secondary boarding schools across seven border communes in Gia Lai province. The presence of these “builders in uniform” not only speeds up the project but also leaves a positive impression on local border residents.

Dispatched to the border commune of Ia Mo to support construction, Ngo Hoang Hiep, a militiaman of the An Phu ward Military Command under the Gia Lai provincial Military Command, expressed his pride. He noted that despite harsh weather and living conditions, everyone remains united to complete the mission so that border students can soon enjoy a modern, new school for the upcoming academic year.

Having previously participated in the “Quang Trung Campaign” to repair storm-damaged houses in the Central region, Non-commissioned Major Nguyen Dinh Trung of Company 4, Battalion 2 (Engineer Brigade 7, Army Corps 34) is now supporting the construction of the boarding school in Ia Chia commune. The Major affirmed that this activity is both a political task and a demonstration of the affection and responsibility of Uncle Ho’s soldiers toward the people.

Aiming to complete all construction, equipment installation, and handover procedures before the 2026-2027 school year, the forces have been working day and night. Troops were assigned to build classrooms, dormitories, libraries, multi-purpose halls, and auxiliary infrastructure. Specifically, Engineer Brigade 7 is responsible for building the perimeter fence at the Ia Chia commune boarding school.

Le Trung Toan, Chairman of the Ia Puch commune People’s Committee, highly appreciated the military’s support. Facing potential delays, the large-scale, disciplined, and skilled participation of the troops helped Ia Puch and other localities solve their labor shortage, ensuring the project meets its deadline.

Accelerating the project to the finish line

Gia Lai has seven border communes - Ia Mo, Ia Puch, Ia Pnon, Ia Nan, Ia Dom, Ia Chia, and Ia O - with 21 primary and secondary schools. Due to a lack of boarding facilities, combined with vast geographical distances and ethnic minorities making up 54% of the 9,480 students, this inter-level school project is of special significance.

With a total investment of over VND 1.5 trillion covering nearly 52 hectares, the project is expected to serve more than 7,000 students, contributing to improving educational levels, developing human resources, and consolidating defense and security in the border region.

Although generally on schedule, the rainy season in the Central Highlands heavily impacts construction. Senior Colonel Nguyen Xuan Son, Deputy Political Commissar of the Gia Lai provincial Military Command, stated that following mid-June progress inspections in Ia Mo and Ia Puch, the unit agreed to deploy additional masons and painters to accelerate work before the heavy rains begin.

Lieutenant Colonel Dang Van Ha, Deputy Chief of Politics of Engineer Brigade 7, noted that since June 5, nearly 60 personnel from his brigade and Anti-aircraft Artillery Brigade 234 (Army Corps 34) have supported construction in Ia Chia. With only 54% of the workload completed by July 9, the units requested additional troops from higher commands and organized continuous construction shifts to ensure both progress and quality.

Leaders of Army Corps 34 reported the establishment of a steering committee and the deployment of over 150 skilled personnel from Division 320, Anti-aircraft Artillery Brigade 234, Artillery Brigade 40, and Engineer Brigade 7. Supported by military medics and auxiliary workers, the soldiers have been operating in three shifts and four teams, striving to complete the project before the August 20 deadline.
