Military Region 2 holds exercise on natural disaster response
PANO – Under the instructions of the National Committee for Response to Incidents and Natural Disasters and Search and Rescue, the Military Region 2 Command held an exercise on response to flooding, landslides and search and rescue in Lao Cai province on August 21.
Senior Lieutenant General Pham Ngoc Minh, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and Vice President of the national committee, attended the event.
The exercise aimed to raise participating forces’ awareness of natural disaster response as well as their skills to mobilize personnel, vehicles and equipment to overcome the aftermath of flooding and landslides in the province.
The natural disaster response exercise was successfully concluded in line with the set plan while ensuring absolute safety for personnel and equipment. The results of the event highlighted the importance of local leadership in organizing, commanding, and connecting participating forces in response to flooding and landslides and conducting search and rescue operations as well as the key role of military and public security forces in natural disaster response, and search and rescue missions.
At the event, General Minh instructed relevant agencies and units to promote information dissemination to raise local people’s awareness of natural disasters so as to develop effective response plans to minimize losses of lives and property.
He emphasized the need to foster cooperation among forces and arrange standby personnel to deal with incidents in a timely and effective manner. Meanwhile, military units should promote education to raise troops’ awareness and determination to undertake and fulfill all assigned missions and to make recommendations for local leadership and people to cope with natural disasters effectively.
At the end of the event, the National Committee for Response to Incidents and Natural Disasters and Search and Rescue presented certificates of merit to three groups and six individuals with good performances in the exercise, while the Military Region 2 Command honored seven groups and 40 individuals.
