Since its inception, the Vietnam Peacekeeping Center, the predecessor of the VNDPKO, has always given top priority to the training work to ensure that its staff are fully equipped with knowledge, skills, and capability to perform U.N. peacekeeping tasks and stay ready to fulfill all assignments at U.N. missions. In addition, the VNDPKO has received great support in training from international partners.

An overview of the event

Up to date, the VNDPKO, in collaboration with other agencies and units, has trained more than 550 officers in individual form and opened 21 courses for nearly 1,500 servicemen of five Level-2 field hospitals and two engineering companies.

The department also successfully organized a refresher course on operating heavy engineering equipment in 2019, a course for trainers of operating heavy engineering equipment in 2020 in the framework of the U.N. Triangular Partnership Program with Japan. In addition, it succeeded in organizing the Competency Evaluation Program for Prospective U.N. Peacekeepers (CEPPP) under the ADMM+ Experts’ Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations Cycle 4 in the 2021-2023 period with Vietnam and Japan as co-chairs in 2023. Notably, it successfully hosted the Vietnam - India bilateral army exercise on U.N. peacekeeping operations (VINBAX) in 2023.

Speeches delivered at the meeting gave a comprehensive and deep look into the U.N. peacekeeping training work over the past years and pointed out advantages, shortcomings, causes, and lessons during the work implementation. They also suggested training orientations, goals, and solutions according to the U.N. guidance and regulations, and made proposals on adjustments of the training program in order to improve quality and efficiency of the work.

Addressing the conference, Gen. Tan highlighted the quality, effectiveness, reality closeness of the training work, contributing to the absolute safety of personnel and equipment during task performance at U.N. Missions.

Given higher task requirements in the coming time, the leader asked the VNDPKO to work closely with relevant agencies and units to adjust frame of training programs according to the U.N. request, stay updated with the U.N.’s training programs and requirements, and build at least one specialized training course on U.N. peacekeeping that soon receives recognition from the U.N.

Regarding the adjustments in training programs, Gen. Tan laid stress on the reference to types of units, number of personnel and equipment to meet the U.N. and the Ministry of National Defense of Vietnam’s requirements and real conditions at U.N. missions.

Authorized by the Defense Minister, Gen. Tan handed over the Minister’s certificates of merit to collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in the work in the 2014-2024 period.
