The delegation was welcomed by representatives of the local authorities, armed forces stationed on the island, local residents, and schoolchildren. During the visit, the delegation joined a number of pre-Tet activities with officers, soldiers, and local people, presented gifts, and conveyed the care, encouragement, and shared sentiments of people nationwide toward those living and working in the zone.
Tho Chu is the southwestern frontline island of the country, covering an area of about 14 square kilometers and the largest of the eight islands in the Tho Chu Archipelago. It is currently an administrative unit of Tho Chau Special Zone in An Giang province. Thanks to its natural conditions, the island holds advantages for socio-economic development as well as for strengthening national defense and security. However, its great distance from the mainland and harsh weather conditions continue to pose significant challenges to daily life, transportation, and living conditions for both residents and stationed forces.

In recent years, with the attention and support of the Party, the State, and localities, particularly provinces, cities, and businesses, the living and working conditions of officers, soldiers, and residents on the island have steadily improved. A range of essential social, cultural, and welfare facilities has been built and upgraded, including power supply systems, a medical station, a post office, kindergartens, primary and lower secondary schools, and memorial sites honoring President Ho Chi Minh, naval officers and soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the liberation of the island, and more than 500 civilians killed by the Khmer Rouge.

The living standards of residents in Tho Chau Special Zone continue to improve. |
The development of Tho Chau Special Zone has also benefited from the substantial contributions of Party committees, local authorities, residents of various provinces and cities, units, and businesses through many practical and meaningful activities. These efforts have helped transform the island’s appearance, encourage both military personnel and civilians to overcome difficulties, and build a stronger and more prosperous Tho Chau Special Zone, contributing to the firm protection of national sovereignty over the country’s southwestern sea and islands.
