During the national resistance war against U.S. invaders, the unit sent over 5,000 troops to the battlefield. The commando troops did bravely fight against enemies and gained a number of remarkable achievements.

After the national reunification on April 30, 1975, Commando Brigade 5 was engaged in combat and responsible for training Lao and Cuban soldiers.

After 55 years of construction and development, the brigade has tried its best to well perform tasks assigned by the Party and State. The unit received the title of the Hero of the People’s Armed Forces on December 22, 2004.

In recent years, it has made recommendations to higher levels on building the commando force while usually taking care of troops and ensuring financial, logistic, and technical work for training and other missions.

In addition, the brigade has also effectively implemented gratitude activities in the areas where it is stationed.
