Delegates from the National Assembly’s Committees, namely Law, Defense and Security, External Relations, together with the VNDPKO, and the Ministry of Public Security’s Permanent Office on U.N. Peacekeeping Operations looked back upon the 10-year journey of the Vietnamese peacekeeping force and the necessity to perfect policies and laws on participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations.

An overview of the workshop |
In her speech, Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper Pham Thi Thanh Huyen said that Vietnam's current legal regulations on participation in peacekeeping operations have some limitations and need to be supplemented, updated and adjusted to suit changes in the world and practical needs of peacekeeping missions.
She pointed out challenges in human resources as an important issue. According to her, long-term participation and sustainability in peacekeeping operations require huge investment in human resources, funding, and other resources. Ensuring the rights, welfare and safety of troops participating in peacekeeping operations must be considered as well.
Other delegates attributed limitations and shortcomings during the implementation of peacekeeping missions to the shortage of mechanisms, policies, and inadequate legal framework that have not met the reality of U.N. peacekeeping operations as well as the lack of consistency in legal documents on U.N. peacekeeping operations. Some shared difficulties and challenges that peacekeepers encountered during task performance.

All delegates stressed the importance of perfecting the legal corridor so that Vietnam could engage in peacekeeping operations in a more effective manner. The building of such corridor needs to ensure compatibility with international law, especially the regulations of the U.N. and international organizations to which Vietnam is a member.
Also at the workshop, delegates discussed and proposed solutions and opined on the draft Law on Participation in U.N. Peacekeeping Forces which is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly for comments at its 9th session and for approval at the 10th session.
