During the reception, Gen. Nghia affirmed that the visit was paid at the time when both countries were celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam - U.S. Comprehensive Partnership (2012-2023) and has just lifted the Vietnam - U.S. relations to the comprehensive strategic partnership during U.S. President Joe Biden’s official visit to Vietnam in last September, paving the way for both sides to boost defense cooperation, for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

An overview of the talks

Gen. Nghia underlined that over the past time, the Vietnam - U.S. defense cooperation has been implemented according to signed documents and agreements with remarkable achievements in the fields of war legacy settlement, U.N. peacekeeping operations, medical training; while highly appreciating the role of the U.S. Army Pacific in the bilateral cooperation.

Regarding cooperation orientations in the time to come, Gen. Nghia urged both sides to effectively implement signed documents and agreements, focusing on U.N. peacekeeping operations and raising the quality of cooperation in education and training, among others. He also voiced that the U.S. should give high priority to bolstering cooperation in overcoming war consequences, contributing to protecting public health and socio-economic development. “Vietnam pledges to create all favorable conditions for the search for missing U.S. servicemen’s remains from the war in Vietnam,” he added.

On the occasion, Gen. Nghia also invited Gen. Charles Flynn and representatives of the U.S. Army Pacific to participate in the Vietnam International Defense Expo 2024.

For his part, Gen. Charles Flynn thanked the Vietnamese side for the warm reception, underscoring that the lifting of the Vietnam - U.S. relations was a milestone in the bilateral relations. He also stressed the importance of the Vietnam - U.S. defense cooperation as well as practical outcomes in this field over the past time, adding that high-ranking visits will pave the way for expanding and promoting the bilateral defense cooperation in the time ahead.

At the same time, he hoped that the Vietnam People’s Army and U.S. Army would further cooperate in many other fields, especially delegation exchange, education and training, among others. The U.S. side will try its best to foster bilateral cooperation as targeted.
