At the ceremony, Senior Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, reported the results of training and preparation of the L2FH Rotation 2 to the participants.

In preparation, apart from their medical expertise, the medical staff and workers of the hospital were trained in English language and peacekeeping skills both at home and overseas. The training courses covered such subjects as air medevac, response to mass casualty, prevention of epidemic outbreaks, etc. The courses were designed to simulate the conditions of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The UN has also asked Vietnam to provide medical aid to South Sudan citizens in certain emergency cases.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong speaks at the event.

On behalf of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Deputy Chief of the General Staff, declared the departure of the L2FH Rotation 2 to the UNMISS. He stressed that the staff of the hospital should strictly observe military discipline and regulation while being transported to Bentiu, South Sudan. Due to the long hours of travel, members of the hospital must support one another to ensure absolute safety. As soon as they reach Bentiu, they must quickly settle down and take over the duties from the L2FH Rotation 1.

General Vinh then handed over the State President’s decision to the leadership of the hospital. Addressing the event, General Vinh stressed that Vietnam deeply understands the value of peace, as the country has undergone two wars of resistance. The country is consistently and resolutely pursuing the goal of keeping peace, contributing to UN peacekeeping operations.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh (C) hands over the State President’s decision to the leadership of the hospital.

General Vinh also asked members of the hospital to stay united, overcome all difficulties, and successfully complete all tasks assigned by Vietnam and the UN.

When in South Sudan, members of the hospital must promote the role of doctors to wholeheartedly cure patients in war-torn areas. They will also closely coordinate with other agencies and forces at UNMISS to best implement their duties, truly becoming messengers of peace and beautifying the image of Vietnam and its people.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh addresses the event.

General Vinh noted that members of the L2FH Rotation 2 must always bear in mind that on their chests is the national flag and on their shoulders are badges of ranks of the Vietnam People’s Army. They are to uphold the virtues of Uncle Ho’s soldiers. He wished luck and success to all of the 63 members of the hospital.

On the UN side, UN Medical Director Jillann Farmer extended her greetings and best wishes to those ready for the UNMISS. She thanked Vietnam for its long-term support for the peacekeeping operations in South Sudan. She reiterated the start of the fine relationship between Vietnam and the UN, as the L2FH Rotation 1 of Vietnam was deployed to South Sudan more than one year ago.
