At the dialogue, the two sides exchanged their views on the world-wide situation, as well as on regional issues of mutual concern. The two sides also reviewed the implementation of agreed cooperation contents at the fourth defense policy dialogue held in Tokyo last November. They expressed satisfaction over the good results of the past defense cooperation, as well as the active role of the relevant agencies in carrying out the agreed contents.
Deputy Defense Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh stressed that the Party, State and the People’s Army of Vietnam have always paid special attention to, reserved resources for, and called for support from the international community in overcoming the consequences of war. It was proposed that Japan support the Vietnamese in piloting the dioxin-decontamination technology at Bien Hoa Airport and in helping Vietnam in its efforts to clear out unexploded ordnance.
The two sides agreed to continue improving cooperation through delegation exchange, training and sharing of experience in the joining of UN peacekeeping operations, cyber security, maritime security, defense industry cooperation, and transfer of technology. The leaders of the two defense ministries would also provide favorable conditions for their subordinate units to carry out cooperation in other areas, such as search and rescue, military medicine, and in improving information sharing between strategic research bodies of the two ministries.
