Vietnam, Italy hold third defense policy dialogue
PANO – Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and Deputy Defense Minister, received Mr. Angelo Tofalo, Italian Undersecretary for Defense, in Hanoi on July 10.
At the reception, Mr. Tofalo informed General Giang of the results of the third Vietnam-Italy Defense Policy Dialogue, which had been organized previously in the capital city of Vietnam.
In turn, the host highly valued the dialogue’s outcomes and expressed thanks for Italy’s support for Vietnam in the recent election for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council in the 2020-2021 term.

General Giang underlined that the effective implementation of such a dialogue mechanism would further contribute to expanding the bilateral defense cooperation in accordance with the memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation signed by the two sides in 2013.
Moreover, the general wanted that the Vietnam-Italy defense relations would be continuously expanded in order to become a pillar of the two countries’ strategic partnership.
Earlier on the same day, at the headquarters of the Vietnamese Defense Ministry, Senior Lieutenant General Be Xuan Truong, Deputy Defense Minister, and Mr. Tofalo co-chaired the third Vietnam-Italy Defense Policy Dialogue.

At the meeting, General Truong and Mr. Tofalo exchanged views on global and regional issues of mutual concern.
They reviewed the development of the bilateral defense relations and emphasized that the two sides should effectively conduct the deputy ministerial-level defense policy dialogue and the working group meeting on defense cooperation.
General Truong and Mr. Tofalo agreed to further the two countries’ defense ties, focusing on promoting coordination at multilateral mechanisms and forums, promoting cooperation in training languages for personnel of the two militaries, boosting cooperation in UN peacekeeping operations via exchanges of experts, and establishing an international cooperation mechanism on mine action in Vietnam.
