Officers of ASEAN countries’ navy, air force, coast guard and border forces participated in a training course on exclusive economic zone protection from May 9th to 13th in Da Nang, Vietnam.

The training course was held by the UK Defense Ministry, in association with the Vietnamese National Defense Ministry.

According to organizers, the course drew 9 Vietnamese officers, as well as 6 from Indonesia, 3 from Malaysia, 3 from Brunei, 2 from Thailand, and 2 from the Philippines.

During the course, participants were taught maritime knowledge and maritime international law by competent teachers. They also discussed regional and global maritime threats; maritime safety systems; search and rescue missions; maritime environmental issues; and disaster management.

Major Ted Bath from the UK Royal Air Force said he was very honored to work with competent officers from five ASEAN member countries in the great Vietnamese city of Da Nang. “The course helps improve knowledge of exclusive economic zones and of approaches to better managing and protecting exclusive economic zones,” he added.

This was the first time the UK Defense Ministry conducted a military training course in Vietnam. The course was seen as a new development in cooperation on military training between Vietnam and the UK.

“I want to deepen bilateral defense ties between the UK and Vietnam via shared information and experiences in the coming time,” UK Defense Attaché to Vietnam, Colonel Tim Below said.
