Peacekeeper-doctors practice field surgery
PANO – The Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations under the Ministry of National Defense and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and other relevant agencies opened an intensive course on field surgery for medical personnel of the Level-two Field Hospital (L2FH) No.2 in Hanoi on November 26.
In his remarks, Senior Colonel Hoang Kim Phung, Director of the Vietnam Department for Peacekeeping Operations, held that the L2FH No.2 would replace the Vietnamese L2FH No.1 next year. The department has actively prepared for the L2FH No.2’s staff with both peacekeeping knowledge and medical expertise.
Right after taking over the L2FH from the UK in Bentiu, South Sudan, the medical personnel of Vietnamese L2FH No.1 received and successfully treated patients, highly appreciated by the UN, he added.

During the three-day course, specialists from the ICRC will equip the trainees with knowledge, techniques and skills to effectively conduct field surgery under different scenarios close to activities at a UN mission.
The course aims at helping the L2FH No.2’s staff improve their expertise so that they could effectively apply what they learn to their coming assignments in South Sudan in November 2019.
Since 2016, the ICRC has worked with the Vietnam Department for Peacekeeping Operations to open a number of training courses on international law for Vietnamese peacekeepers.
Recently in November 2018, they introduced the International Humanitarian Law to the personnel of the L2FH No.2, with the aim of improving their capacity and understanding of humanitarian activities and international law applied to UN missions.
