General Nguyen Tan Cuong emphasized that over the past time, Vietnam - U.S. defense cooperation has been effectively implemented in accordance with signed documents and agreements, as well as the outcomes of talks between the two defense ministers during Vietnamese Defense Minister’s official visit to the U.S. in September 2024, achieving positive outcomes in various fields, with remarkable contribution from the U.S.’s Indo-Pacific Command. Cooperation contents, such as training, military medicine, U.N. peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, cyber-security, defense industry, among others, have been effectively carried out.

During the meeting, General Nguyen Tan Cuong spoke highly of the U.S. Department of Defense in general and the U.S.’s Indo-Pacific Command in particular, for their strong commitment to settling war legacy in Vietnam. He appreciated the U.S. financial support for the dioxin remediation project at Bien Hoa Airport, cooperation in unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance, development of a training ground project at Ba Vi for the Vietnam National Mine Action Center (VNMAC), and efforts in searching for and repatriating the remains of Vietnamese war martyrs. Vietnam is committed to facilitating activities to search for U.S. servicemen missing in action (MIA).
General Nguyen Tan Cuong proposed that the two countries’ militaries continue to closely coordinate in implementing agreed contents, focusing on delegation exchange, dialogue, training, U.N. peacekeeping, maritime security, military medicine, humanitarian assistance, and defense industry. These efforts aim to further enhance Vietnam - U.S. defense cooperation, contributing to peace, stability, and development in the region and the world.

For his part, on behalf of the delegation, Admiral Samuel Paparo thanked the Vietnamese Defense Ministry for inviting them to attend the Vietnam International Defense Expo 2024, expressing his impression on the expo’ opening ceremony and the impressive display of weapons and defense equipment at the event.
Emphasizing that Vietnam is an important partner of the U.S., Admiral Samuel Paparo hoped to further promote effective and substantive cooperation between the two sides in many fields such as people-to-people exchange, economic cooperation, defense cooperation, among others. These efforts aim to observe the 30th anniversary of U.S. - Vietnam relations in 2025.
