GDP leader receives relatives of former Chinese military advisors
PANO - Deputy Director of the General Department of Political Affairs (GDP) Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Gau received the delegation of relatives of former Chinese military advisors, led by Wei Xiaoyi, whose father was Wei Guoqing - head of the Chinese military advisors in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, in Hanoi on May 9.
On behalf of the Ministry of National Defense and the GDP, Gen. Gau expressed his delight and touchingness at welcoming the Chinese delegation and leaders and staff of Nam Xishan Hospital in Vietnam on the occasion of the 70-year Dien Bien Phu Victory celebration (May 7, 1954 - 2024).
The Vietnamese official emphasized that the friendship between Vietnam and China which was fostered by Presidents Ho Chi Minh and Mao Zedong and generations of the two countries’ leaders is a common precious asset of the two nations, contributing to stably developing the traditional bilateral friendship, and bringing practical benefits to the peoples of the two countries.
Gen. Gau confirmed that Vietnam always remembers and is grateful for the wholehearted and precious support of the Party, government, people and People’s Liberation Army of China in the past struggle for independence and national reunification, especially China’s sending of military advisors to help Vietnam in its revolutionary cause. The assistance of these military advisors, including advisors Chen Geng and Wei Guoqing, was one of the important factors that made the revolution of Vietnam a success and greatly contributed to the two countries’ relations.
Saying that China is given top priority in Vietnam’s foreign policy, Gen. Gau expressed his belief that after this Vietnam visit, the delegation would continue to spread the good sentiments between the two militaries and peoples, especially youths.

For their part, Wei Xiaoyi, who was a cadre of the News Department under the General Staff of the People’s Liberation Army of China, and other members of the Chinese delegation thanked the Vietnamese ministry for creating favorable conditions for them to take part in the Dien Bien Phu Victory celebration. They expressed their deep feelings with the country, people and military of Vietnam and stressed that they, together with young generation of China, would continue to promote the solidarity, mutual support and fruitful ties between the two countries.
