Defense leader receives IISS-Asia Executive Director
PANO - Deputy Minister of National Defense Sr. Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien received Executive Director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies - Asia (IISS-Asia) Veerle Nouwens on May 6 at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense (MND).
Gen. Chien thanked the IISS for sending a letter of invitation to Minister of National Defense General Phan Van Giang to participate and deliver a speech at the upcoming 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue, slated for May 30 and June 1 in Singapore.
The Vietnamese defense leader emphasized that Shangri-La Dialogue is an important forum for policy-makers to present their viewpoints on international and regional emerging issues and make transparent the defense and security policies of their country.

He added that since the first dialogue held in 2002, the Vietnamese MND has sent delegations to take part in with head delegate regularly delivering important remarks at plenary sessions.
The host hoped that the Vietnamese MND would welcome IISS’s leaders and experts in Vietnam in the coming time to exchange views, share experience, and seek cooperation and academic research opportunities between the IISS and Vietnamese defense research agencies. He confirmed that the Vietnamese MND will create conditions for its affiliated research agencies to boost cooperation with the IISS and actively send delegations to IISS-Asia-hosted activities at the invitation of the IISS.

For her part, Ms. Veerle Nouwens informed the host of the preparation for the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue and underlined that this year’s topics feature current situations in the region and the world.
Gen. Chien expressed his confidence that with thorough preparation of the IISS in general and the IISS-Asia in particular, the 22nd edition will be successful, thus importantly contributing to maintaining regional peace, stability and security.
