The Japan Self-Defense Forces were established on July 1, 1954. In recent years, the defense relationship between Vietnam and Japan has grown significantly, becoming one of the key pillars of bilateral ties. This development is based on the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding on Bilateral Defense Cooperation and Exchanges signed in October 2011, as well as the Joint Vision Statement on Defense Cooperation for the next decade signed by the two defense ministries in April 2018.

The mechanisms for defense dialogue and discussions between naval, ground, and air staff officers have been effectively maintained. Both sides have actively collaborated in military medicine, addressing post-war consequences, participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations, and engaging in various practical activities to enhance cooperation, mutual understanding, and trust.
