PANO – The Saigon Newport Corporation on December 10th unloaded its 3 millionth TEU of containerized freight at the Tan Cang-Cai Mep deepwater port in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City.

The 3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit), equivalent to 42 million tons of goods, marks the corporation’s solid performance, while many local seaports have seen their business plummeting in recent years.

Till the end of 2013, it targets to reach cargo throughput of nearly 3.9 million TEUs (or 51.2 million tons), a year-on-year increase of 11.2 per cent. Of which, Tan Cang-Cai Mep Port will load and unload about 3.15 million TEUs, making up 85 per cent of Ho Chi Minh City’s container operations.

The same day, the Saigon Newport Corporation inked a joint venture contract with its Japanese partner, Molnykit, for Component B of the project to build the Hai Phong International Gateway Port in Cat Hai district, Hai Phong city. This is the major deepwater port project in the North, costing VND25 trillion (US$ 1.2 billion) from Japan’s ODA, including 2 components A and B, covering an area of 130.7ha, and to be put into operation by 2017.
