Combining domestic strength with U.S. technology

Recently, Light Reading, a leading U.S.-based telecommunications technology outlet, published a notable article titled "Vietnam has become a big deal for Qualcomm in 5G RAN," highlighting Vietnam’s growing role, particularly Viettel's, in the global 5G ecosystem. This demonstrates the growing stature and credibility of Vietnamese enterprises on the global telecommunications map.

As one of the most influential telecom publications, Light Reading provides updates on key trends, technologies, and strategies in the global networking industry. According to Light Reading, Viettel has become one of Qualcomm’s most strategic partners in the commercialization of 5G radio access networks (RAN) based on open architecture (Open RAN). VHT has emerged as a key player in developing core software for 5G, enabling the creation of a “Make in Vietnam” 5G network, where Viettel-developed software integrates with Qualcomm’s low-latency hardware.

Notably, Vietnam, with young workforce and favorable R&D policies, is attracting more major global tech players. Viettel, with its scale, strong human resources, and extensive infrastructure, is well-positioned to seize these opportunities. Light Reading quoted General Manager of Qualcomm’s 5G infrastructure division Gerardo Giaretta’s saying, “They have an in-house development team and a talented group of engineers with a strong desire for success.”

With the strategy of developing indigenous technology while leveraging solutions from leading partners like Qualcomm, Viettel is recognized for its bold and unique approach to 5G deployment. Light Reading noted that Viettel stands out as one of the few operators globally to self-develop its network technology, with most of the operating software developed by VHT, its core R&D unit.

Viettel’s 5G technology has potential to expand internationally

Nigerian media has praised the partnership between VHT and Casade Defence Systems, a leading local company of the country, in launching Nigeria’s first private 5G network. This collaboration is expected to usher in a new era of high-speed, modern, and stable internet connectivity for the Nigerians.

The Business Africa Digest quoted Professor John Ifediora, President of Casade Defence Systems, noting that Viettel’s 5G Private solution is already deployed in Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. He emphasized that this advanced technology is now ready to go global, with a focus on Africa, especially remote, coastal, and underserved communities in Nigeria. Africa can leverage this technology to bridge the digital divide, boost economic growth, and enhance industrial capacity.

Light Reading also noted that Viettel’s domestic success could be a springboard for international expansion for both Viettel and Qualcomm. Viettel currently operates in multiple countries including Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Mozambique, and Peru, where 5G is not yet widely deployed. These represent ideal markets for Viettel to expand its self-developed 5G model.

At the recent GSMA Digital Nation Summit in Vietnam, Deputy Director of the Broadband Wireless Device Research Center Tran Van Tung shared Viettel’s journey of mastering Open RAN and 5G technologies. Initially focused on 4G infrastructure, the company pivoted to 5G research and development in 2018. Though not an early 5G adopter, Viettel High Tech is now a pioneer in core R&D. Open RAN is more than just a technical solution, it serves as a platform for collaboration among telecom operators, businesses, research institutions, and governments. With support from Qualcomm and other partners, VHT accessed cutting-edge chipsets early and has become one of the world’s leading Open RAN manufacturers.

Earlier, at the commercial launch of Viettel’s 5G O-RAN base stations in late 2024, CEO of VHT Nguyen Vu Ha, emphasized that VHT has completed a full suite of 5G solutions, from core networks to RAN. According to the Group’s strategy, VHT will gradually penetrate the global market, using Vietnam as a launchpad for its “Made by Viettel” 5G products. “By 2025, 2,000 5G Open RAN base stations will be deployed in Vietnam. Simultaneously, VHT will actively promote its 5G solutions internationally, in India and other potential markets such as the Middle East,” Mr. Ha said.

According to Mr. Ha, while many telecom firms develop Open RAN-based networks, only a few fully master the entire stack like VHT. This allows the company to customize and tailor solutions to meet specific needs of customers.
