PANO – An exhibition, “Japanese Traditional Dolls”, will be jointly organized by the Japan Foundation Centre for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, Vietnamese Women’s Museum and Embassy of Japan in Hanoi from March 7th to 31st in celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013 and International Women’s Day.
On show are 250 Japanese dolls, including Edo-Kimekomi Dolls, female dolls dressed in kimonos, dolls depicting characters from traditional Japanese performing arts like Noh and Kabuki, Hakata dolls or clay dolls, and Kokeshi dolls with their unique character,
These skilfully hand-made traditional dolls will help Vietnamese people learn more about Japanese traditional heritage and culture.
Besides the exhibition, other Japanese cultural activities such as Kimono/Yukata trials, Origami workshops, and Japanese traditional toys will be also presented in the Vietnamese Women’s Museum (mainly on the opening day).
“Dolls” have been part of everyday life in Japan since ancient times as they reflect the customs of Japan and the aspirations of its people with centuries-old distinctive regional attitudes. Japanese dolls now can be categorized in many ways according to the techniques and material used to create them, as well as the themes and shapes.
