Vietnam receives remains of volunteer soldiers fallen in Laos
PANO - On the morning of May 20, at the Lao Bao - Densavan International Border Gate, Quang Tri province, in coordination with Savannakhet and Khammouane provinces of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, held a ceremony to hand over and receive the remains of 28 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and advisors who sacrificed their lives in Laos during different wartime periods.
The remains were recovered by Teams 584 and 589 of the Department of Political Affairs under the Quang Tri Provincial Military Command during the 2025–2026 dry-season search and repatriation mission in Savannakhet and Khammouane provinces.
During the 2025–2026 dry season, despite difficulties related to terrain, weather, and living conditions, officers and personnel of Teams 584 and 589 remained stationed in the field and persistently searched many remote mountainous and forested areas. Throughout the mission, the teams received strong support and assistance from local authorities, armed forces, and especially the valuable cooperation and affection of Lao people from various ethnic groups in Savannakhet and Khammouane provinces.
As a result, the teams successfully recovered and repatriated 28 sets of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and advisors who died in Laos while conducting international service in wartime, including 12 recovered by Team 584 and 16 by Team 589.
At the ceremony, the special task committees of the three provinces signed the handover record for the remains. In a solemn and emotional atmosphere, delegates offered incense and flowers in tribute, expressing profound gratitude to the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for national liberation and fulfilled their noble international duty.
Immediately after the ceremony, the 28 sets of remains were transported to the Road 9 National War Cemetery for biological sample collection and procedures related to identification in accordance with regulations.
According to the plan, a memorial, funeral, and burial ceremony for the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and advisors whose remains have been repatriated from Laos during the 2025-2026 dry season will be held on the morning of May 23 at the Road 9 National War Cemetery in Quang Tri province.
