N.A. Vice Chairman Tran Quang Phuong visits Con Dao museum. |
Con Dao, once known as a “hell on earth,” bears witness to countless losses and pain, but also to the enduring spirit of resilience and defiance. After the ceremony, delegates participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at sea to pay respects to the fallen heroes.
Reportedly, over the 113 years of Con Dao Prison’s operation, more than 20,000 revolutionary soldiers and patriotic compatriots laid down their lives here. During the construction of the wharf and coastal embankment alone, it is estimated that 914 people died from exhaustion, being crushed by rocks, or tortured by the enemy. As a result, prisoners named the site “Wharf 914” to commemorate those who lost their lives here.
As part of the working visit to Con Dao, Vice Chairman Tran Quang Phuong and the delegation also visited the Con Dao Prison historical site and Con Dao museum. Con Dao Prison is the largest and oldest prison relic site in Vietnam. Operating from 1862 to 1975, the prison system included a total of 117 cells, 504 isolated cells (also known as tiger cages), and 18 prison departments.
* On the same day, Vice Chairman Tran Quang Phuong and the delegation visited and presented gifts to national contributors in Con Dao. Visiting wounded soldier Tran Xuan Duc, with a 63% disability rate, and war veteran Nguyen Van Huong, with a 43% disability rate, the N.A. vice chairman inquired after their health and living conditions. He expressed gratitude for their sacrifices during the struggle for national liberation and, encouraged them to continue promoting the traditions and to inspire younger generations to study, work, and contribute to the development of their homeland.
