An Giang province’s soldiers active in finding martyrs’ remains in Cambodia
PANO - Deep in the forests of Cambodia, Vietnamese soldiers persistently search for martyrs’ remains. As part of the “500-day-and-night campaign to accelerate the search, collection, and identification of martyrs’ remains,” Teams K92 and K93 under the An Giang provincial Military Command continue their mission to repatriate the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers.
In Kampong Speu province, Team K93 members dig through dry red soil. Just a rusted button or a torn hammock can serve as a crucial signs, telling them that fallen comrades lay close by.

Within Military Region 9, the An Giang provincial Military Command is the only unit to maintain two teams in Cambodia. Team K92 operates in Kampot, Kep, Preah Sihanouk, and Koh Kong provinces, while Team K93 covers Takeo and Kampong Speu provinces.
The search is becoming increasingly challenging as terrain changes and former battlefields turn into farms or residential areas. The biggest challenge is the race against time, as witnesses are mostly over 80 with fading memories. Despite harsh weather conditions, officers and soldiers hike dozens of kilometers through forests, carry equipment, and sleep in hammocks without electricity or cellular signals.
Non-commissioned Major Danh Ny from Team K92, noted that every piece of information from locals offers a ray of hope. Even when verification takes months without results, the troops encourage one another, driven by the decades-long anticipation of the martyrs’ families.
To date, Teams K92 and K93 have found and collected nearly 2,700 martyrs’ remains inside the country and in Cambodia.
Senior Colonel Cao Minh Tam, Deputy Political Commissar of the An Giang provincial Military Command, emphasized that this work is a crucial political task reflecting the national tradition of gratitude. The official highly valued Teams K92 and K93’s resilience in overcoming hardships, which helps ease the pain of martyrs’ relatives and affirms the good virtue of “Uncle Ho’s soldiers” in peacetime.
