According to Dung, apart from running classes, the unit has made short videos and posted them on its zalo page to help him and his comrades learn the language anytime and anywhere. They not only learn how to pronounce, spell and make complete sentences, but also comprehend the cultural life of the H’mong ethnic minority group.

As a H’mong person, Lieutenant Colonel Giang A Senh, Vice Political Chief of Defense-Economic Unit 326, was tasked to work with the Political Division of the unit to compile H’mong language learning materials.

Senh said that together with equipping troops with common sentences in the H’mong language, learning materials also introduce customs and cultural practices of the H’mong ethnic minority people, thus encouraging troops to learn the language more effectively.

Defense-Economic Unit 326 is tasked with developing socio-economy, helping local people eliminate hunger, reduce poverty, and consolidating defense and security in Sop Cop district of Son La province and Dien Bien and Dien Bien Dong districts of Dien Bien province. Since the unit is located in mountainous localities, where the  majority of the population are H’mong ethnic minorities, its personnel are required to know the language to communicate with local people.

Over the past years, together with carrying out projects to help local people access production and farming technologies and techniques, Defense-Economic Unit 326 has paid attention to launching ethnic minority language learning models. The unit has also encouraged those with good command of the H’mong language to help their comrades to raise their language skills.

According to the unit’s Political Commissar Colonel Tran Quoc Tri, thanks to the model, dozens of troops and staff now know how to communicate in the H’mong language.

Over the past time, in addition to encouraging and motivating officials and employees to learn the language, Defense-Economic Unit 326 tests their learning results on a monthly basis and takes it as one of the criteria to select the best individuals and collectives of the year.
