Living among the people is not just about physical proximity or lending a helping hand. It’s about understanding them, and in return, being loved and protected by them. This is a truth deeply held by the officers of the Nam Can Port Border Gate Border Post under the Ca Mau Provincial Border Guard Command.
Border troops in Ca Mau
According to Lieutenant Colonel Lam Huy Vu, Political Commissar of Nam Can Port Border Gate Border Post, the unit manages 19.3 kilometers of coastline and is responsible for maintaining security and order in Nam Can Port and the anchorage areas of Hon Khoai, Hon Chuoi, the Song Doc estuary, and Mui Tram, all part of Ca Mau province’s maritime zones. The unit also oversees the maritime border areas of Dat Moi and Lam Hai communes in Nam Can district.

Over the years, the unit has successfully fulfilled its duties in managing the port and maritime areas, processing immigration procedures for both domestic and foreign individuals and vehicles involved in trade. Border troops have also actively supported local authorities in ensuring public order, assisted residents in economic development, and partnered with the local government to implement practical and effective community-based programs.
More than a decade ago, Lam Hai and Dat Moi communes were among the most disadvantaged and underdeveloped areas in Ca Mau province and Nam Can district. Today, these once-difficult places have undergone significant change: concrete roads, electric lighting, bridges, and the cheerful sounds of children walking to school in their new uniforms. This transformation reflects the enduring efforts of the border guard force.
Close military-civilian ties
While visiting Lam Hai commune, Lt. Col. Lam Huy Vu pointed to the newly built homes along the Cua Lon River and remarked that the area used to be impoverished. Thanks to supportive policies, sustainable livelihood programs, and the close bond between the people and the soldiers, families now enjoy electricity, new homes, and access to education for their children. One of the most impactful initiatives is the “Adopted Children of Border Posts” program, which has brought lasting change to the remote region.
In addition to caring for children, border guards have helped improve local livelihoods. The unit has partnered with Nam Can district’s functional departments to organize training courses on industrial shrimp farming, crab cultivation, organic vegetable growing, and forest-based honeybee farming, among others.

The unit has also mobilized troops to contribute labor to build houses, open rural roads, dredge canals, and install power lines to bring light to remote areas.
During stormy weather, the unit becomes a haven for fishing vessels. Alongside broadcasting safety warnings, border troops distribute life jackets and essential supplies, urging fishermen to stay ashore for their own safety. Sometimes, in the dead of night, officers and soldiers speed through rough waters in high-powered boats to rescue fishermen in distress. Over time, the image of the border guard has become a cherished memory for many generations in Ca Mau.
