The workshop was co-chaired by Major General Nguyen Truong Giang, Director of the Department of Military Medicine, and Lieutenant General Tran Viet Tien, Director of the Military Medical University.

The event aimed to review military medical support during wars of national liberation and protection, affirm its historical significance, and draw lessons regarding organization, medical support art, civil–military medical coordination, and the medical ethics of military doctors.

At the same time, the workshop served as a forum for scientists, leaders, and military medical personnel to exchange views, analyze historical and practical lessons, and further clarify emerging requirements for military medical work in the new situation. Based on these discussions, participants proposed practical solutions to contribute to the development of the Vietnam People’s Army’s military medical sector in meeting future task requirements.

The outcomes of the workshop provide an important foundation for the military medical sector to continue researching and creatively applying historical experience to the task of building a revolutionary, regular, elite, and modern Vietnam People’s Army, as well as to medical support for training, combat readiness, disaster and epidemic prevention and response, and participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations.

At the workshop, delegates gave opinions focusing on synthesizing and analyzing practical contexts, human resources, material conditions, and organizational structures of the military medical sector in different historical periods. The presentations also reviewed statistical data on outcomes across various aspects of military medical support, with particular emphasis on valuable experiences and lessons learned.

The opinions reaffirmed that military medical support played an especially important role, with direct significance for protecting soldiers’ health, maintaining and developing combat forces, and making decisive contributions to victories in wars of national liberation and protection.

In addition, the presentations systematized and clarified the formation, development, and maturation of the Vietnam People’s Army’s military medical sector. They analyzed distinctive innovations in organizing medical support, particularly the tiered system for treatment and evacuation of wounded and sick soldiers, the close integration of military and civilian medical services, and the promotion of the spirit of self-reliance and resilience under harsh wartime conditions. These factors contributed to shaping a unique military medical support art imbued with the characteristics of Vietnam’s people’s war.
