At the event, Senior Colonel Tran Van Nuoc, the brigade’s commanding officer, reminisced about the unit’s construction and development over the past six decades.

The unit was tasked with building and expanding wharves from Ca Mau to Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces to receive weapons and other military goods shipped by the no-number-ships from the North to the Southern theater and store them at depots to allocate to battlefields across the South of Vietnam.

The birth of Brigade 962 was important to link the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea.

In wartime, the brigade  performed their international duties in Cambodia, helping the Cambodians escape from the Pol Pol genocidal regime, and joined hands with other units in the decisive victory of the Southwestern border protection war. It has expanded its operation area to the Mekong Delta, contributing to firmly safeguarding national independence, sovereignty, unification and territorial integrity.

Experiencing different revolutionary periods in wartime and peacetime, Brigade 962 has always promoted the revolutionary heroism, surmounted all difficulties, completed all assignments, deserved the love of the Mekong Delta’s people.

With its feats-of-arms and outstanding achievements, the brigade has twice been honored with the title “Hero of the People’s Armed Forces” presented by the State, and other noble awards.

Congratulating Brigade 962 on its attainments in the past, Major General Ho Van Thai, Secretary of the Party Committee and Political Commissar of Military Region 9 asked the unit to bring into play its role as a key force of the military region in disaster prevention and control, search and rescue, and taking special duties on request.

Authorized by the Ministry of National Defense’s leadership, Gen. Thai handed over a certificate of merit to the brigade in recognition of its achievements in joining patrols on rivers and along coastal areas, conducting search and rescue operations, and preventing illegal immigration along the Southwestern border.

At the event, Chairman of An Giang provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Binh presented a merit certificate to the brigade for its good task performance of coordination in preventing floating houses and rafts and Vietnamese Cambodians from crossing the border illegally and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

Also at the event, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan presented a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh to Brigade 962’s troops.
