Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong speaks at the National Unity Festival in Hoai Duc district, Hanoi on November 14, 2021.

On the morning of January 1, 2016, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong, Party General Secretary and Secretary of the Central Military Commission, visited and worked with the Hanoi Capital Command, during which he referred to the working trip as a “homecoming.” Because it was like a “homecoming,” the Party leader directed the Hanoi Capital Command not to hold the formal welcome ceremony typically reserved for Party and State leaders. Instead, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong felt joyful and excited since he was welcomed by hearty handshakes of the Hanoi Capital Command’s officers and soldiers.

The “homecoming” used by the Party General Secretary was a humble but right word, demonstrating the close relationship between the Party leader and the capital’s armed forces. During the 2000-2006 period, as a member of the Politburo, Secretary of the Hanoi municipal Party Committee, he also held the position as the Secretary of the Party Committee of the Hanoi Capital Command, the highest leader of the city’s armed forces. Under his direct leadership, the Hanoi’s Military Party Organization (established in October, 1999) led the city's armed forces to excellently fulfill their assigned tasks.

While visiting the Hall of Fame of the Hanoi Capital Command, he demonstrated his comprehensive and profound knowledge about the one-thousand-year-old capital city by describing artifacts and photos of the city’s heroic traditions in detail.
