At the meeting, Lieutenant General Tran Duy Giang, the GDL Director, briefed participants on the use of steam boilers in the military. Giang emphasized the boilers have helped save fuel and energy, ensured good health for the cooks, and improved food quality. However, the boilers have certain disadvantages and safety risks.

The GDL director also added that the GDL directed the Department of Military Supplies to study new stoves. In 2019, the department debuted six new oil stoves and three electric cookers and several military units experimented with them. After the trial period, the new stoves and cookers proved to be effective and have more advantages than the steam boilers. Therefore, the GDL will suggest that the MND replace the broken steam boilers with the new stoves and cookers between 2021 and 2022. From 2023 to 2025, the general department will check the cooker usage demands of military units to make recommendations to the MND leadership to replace the steam boilers.

He urged the general department to do further research on such boilers while continuing testing on the installation of oil stoves and electric cookers at a number of units according to the road-map and making specific assessments before submitting to the MND for comprehensive investment.

Sr. Lt. Gen. Giang also requested relevant agencies to double check the demands for subsidized residences for rent and give priority to building the residences for units in urgent need.
