Defense Minister General Phan Van Giang made the assessment during the visit Military Industry-Telecoms Group (Viettel) on January 26 in Hanoi.

Acknowledging and highly appreciating Viettel’s efforts and achievements obtained in 2021, General Giang asked the business’s personnel to promote their activeness and creativeness in researching and developing new products in accordance with the military’s missions.

Together with popularizing its products and expanding its markets, the business should pay attention to ensuring quality of its products, including those to serve training and combat readiness missions. In addition, it should focus on building human resources in accordance with task requirements and pure and strong Party organizations, the defense minister added.

According to Viettel’s President and Director General Senior Colonel Tao Duc Thang, in 2021, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the business’s personnel tried their best to fulfill all assigned missions. In particular, the group's revenue reached VND 274 trillion, up 3.3%, and its profit reached VND 40,1 trillion, up 2%. It contributed nearly VND 32 trillion to the state budget.

In the telecommunications sector, its foreign markets saw considerable growth. In particular, its African market achieved a record growth of 37%. In domestic market, Viettel continued to maintain its leading position as the best mobile service provider in the country.

In the field of digital solutions, Viettel has rapidly deployed digital solutions and platforms to serve the Government's epidemic prevention and control work.

Viettel’s smart city model won “Smart Cities Award” of the World Communication Awards (WCA) 2021 thanks to its effectiveness and creativity. At present, 30 provinces and cities have signed cooperation agreements with Viettel on applying technologies to smart city building.

In terms of hi-tech industry, last year, the group successfully tested its 5G network and completed 5G ecosystem, becoming the only mobile service provider in the world studying and developing 5G equipment to serve the country’s implementation of its digital transformation strategy.

International organizations also recognized Viettel as the technology enterprise with the highest number of applications and patents granted annually in Vietnam, of which nine inventions received patents in the U.S. Viettel was also recognized as the most influential Vietnamese enterprise in terms of innovation in 2021 in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

In the year, the military business also made positive changes in delivery, logistics, and e-commerce fields. It helped more than 25,000 agricultural production households to sell their products on its e-commerce trading floor, contributing to realizing the national’s digital transformation in the agriculture sector. The group also transported more than 31,000 tons of supplies to pandemic-hit localities to contribute to the nation’s pandemic prevention and control efforts.

This year, Viettel will focus on building digital infrastructure and digital platforms, completing the research and production of hi-tech products, and putting them on the market.

As the lunar New Year is drawing near, on behalf of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense, General Phan Van Giang presented gifts to and wished Viettel to solidarity and success in mission accomplishment, deserving to be a giant of the military and the country.
