Sr. Lt. Gen. Phan Van Giang speaks at the event.

Currently, 9,000 border guards have been deployed to maintain 1,608 checkpoints along the borderlines and curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The checkpoints are located in remote areas and complicated terrains with harsh weather conditions. Therefore, the Vietnam Border Guard Command proposed the Ministry of National Defense’s leadership to further invest in temporary camps and other facilities, helping border guards better safeguard the border and prevent the virus from entering the country from outside.

Addressing the event, General Giang asked the Vietnam Border Guard Command to closely work with the ministry’s relevant units to conduct surveys on major issues such as socio-economic situations, weather and terrain conditions, law violation cases on the borderlines, illegal border crossings as well as COVID-19 situations in specific localities. After that, the command should draw up plans based on the force’s budget to invest in facilities meeting basic demands of troops garrisoned along the borderlines.

General Giang also requested the command to enhance border guards’ capabilities for border management as well as COVID-19 prevention and control in the time to come.
