Border guards’ crime prevention at sea ports reviewed
PANO – The Vietnam Border Guard Command held a conference on August 2 in Da Nang city to review crime prevention and fight at sea ports under the chair of Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, the force’s commander. Senior Lieutenant General Le Chiem, Deputy Defense Minister, attended the event.

Reports delivered at the event showed that over the past time domestic and international criminals took advantage of Vietnam’s open policies on socio-economic development and marine tourism to escalate smuggling at sea and sea ports were “flash points” of smuggling. In response to the situation, border guard commands of coastal provinces and cities launched campaigns against drug trafficking and smuggling at sea ports.
From 2017 to June 2019, border units arrested hundreds of drug dealers, seized hundreds of tons of synthetic drugs, cocaine, catha edulis leaves, cannabis and hookah. They have also captured hundreds of smugglers and seized 8,150 cubic meter of oil, 1 million little of solvent, 2,940 tons of coal, 21 tons of soybeans and 172 tons of urea.
Addressing the conference, General Chiem praised the border guard force for their outstanding achievements in fighting crime in coastal areas in general and at sea ports in particular. He added that in the context of the complicated situation, border guard units should promote their role in advising localities’ leaderships to develop suitable plans as well as coordinate with other forces to promote information dissemination to raise local people’s awareness of crime prevention.
The deputy defense minister also requested the border guard force to promote inspection to discover and deal with illegal acts in a timely manner.
