Vietnam, Japan boost defense cooperation
PANO - Deputy Defense Minister Sen. Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien hosted a reception for Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Yamada Takio at the defense ministry’s headquarters in Hanoi on December 4.
At the reception, General Chien thanked the Japanese ambassador for his contribution to the Vietnam-Japan cooperation and friendship, including the defense ties.
He expressed his hope that the Japanese diplomat will continue making greater contributions to strengthening the bilateral defense cooperation between the two countries in a more practical and effective manner.
The two sides welcomed the results of the defense cooperation over the past time and the implementation of cooperation contents in accordance with signed agreements, namely the Memorandum of Understanding on Bilateral Defense Cooperation and Exchanges signed in October 2011 and the Joint Vision Statement on Defense Cooperation towards the next decade.
Also, they agreed to immediately boost defense cooperation activities once the COVID-19 pandemic is under control, with a focus on the exchange of delegations, deputy ministerial-level defense policy dialogues, human resources training, and military medicine.
Cooperation in UN peacekeeping operations and overcoming war aftermath, and accelerating the completion of the drafting of defense cooperation documents so as to early sign them in the coming time were also discussed.
For his part, Yamada voiced his sympathy over the losses caused by the recent flooding in the central region of Vietnam and pledged to exert efforts to further foster the bilateral defense cooperation in the time to come.
