Meeting to promote cooperation among ASEAN member countries in peacekeeping
PANO – The 16th Meeting of the Experts' Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations (EWG PKO) Cycle 4 for the 2021-2023 period within the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM +) opened virtually on October 11 in Hanoi.

The event is organized by the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense (MND) under the co-chair of Deputy Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations (VNDPKO) Senior Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh and Ms. Matsuzawa Tomoko, Director for Defense Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region of the International Policy Division of the Defense Policy Bureau under the Japanese Ministry of Defense and head of Japan’s experts' working group on peacekeeping.
The event in Hanoi is attended by representatives from the MND’s agencies and units and members of the Japan’s experts' working group on peacekeeping. The online meeting also sees the participation of experts' working groups on peacekeeping of ASEAN member countries, speakers from the U.N. Headquarters, and Japanese defense attaché office in Vietnam.

During the two-day meeting, participants will summarize and evaluate the results of activities after the 14th and 15th sessions. They will also focus on exchanging and discussing the Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) and A4P+ initiatives; sharing experience in coordination between the U.N. and other countries in conducting U.N. peacekeeping activities; promoting women, peace and security agenda; planning for cycle-end exercise.
According to Senior Colonel Nguyen Nhu Canh, through the online conference, Vietnam, as the co-chair of 16th meeting of the Experts' Working Group on Peacekeeping with Japan, wishes to make the most of the results of the previous meetings to turn the agenda into practical actions to enhance cooperation among ADMM+ member countries in U.N. peacekeeping operations. This event demonstrates the efforts of both Vietnam and Japan in maintaining as well as enhancing the activities of the Experts' Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations.
At the meeting, Ms. Matsuzawa Tomoko believed that the contents discussed and exchanged within the framework of the conference will make a positive contribution to the implementation of each country’s commitments and U.N. peacekeeping activities.
ADMM+ is an effective cooperation mechanism on the basis of defense cooperation among member countries. Over more than a decade, ADMM+ has actively contributed to strengthening cooperation in security and defense for peace, stability, and development in the region and the world. ADMM+ currently focuses on seven practical cooperation fields, including U.N. peacekeeping operations.
