Vietnam supports Cambodia’s role as ADMM and ADMM+ Chair
PANO – Cambodia held an online conference on January 6 to consult Vietnam on contents in its ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) Chairmanship Year 2022.
Director of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense and Head of Vietnam’s ADSOM WG (ASEAN Defense Senior Officials' Meeting Working Group) Senior Colonel Vu Thanh Van and Deputy Director of the General Department of Policies and Foreign Relations and Head of Cambodia’s ADSOM WG Lieutenant General Lay Chenda attended the event.

At the event, Lieutenant General Lay Chenda reported that the theme of Cambodia’s ADMM Chairmanship Year 2022 will be “United for a harmonious security.” In the year, the country will prioritize to strengthening commitment to maintaining regional peace, stability, and prosperity in line with the Win-Win Policy; increasing the participation of women in U.N. peacekeeping operations; encouraging cooperation among ASEAN defense agencies in response to the pandemic; intensifying efforts to fully implement ADMM’s 3-year Action Plan; enhancing trust-building and transparency.
The Cambodian official also briefed on the schedule of activities to be hosted by Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense within the framework of ADMM in 2022 and consulted Vietnam on the draft documents developed by the Cambodian Defense Ministry.
For his part, Senior Colonel Vu Thanh Van affirmed the Vietnamese Defense Ministry’s support for the Cambodian Defense Ministry’s role as ADMM and ADMM+ Chair in 2022. Highlighting the Cambodian Defense Ministry’s active and pro-active preparation for the year, he strongly believed that the ministry will successfully fulfill its role as ADMM and ADMM+ Chair in 2022, contributing to consolidating solidarity among ASEAN members to flexibly and pro-actively respond to security challenges posed to the association.
Talking about documents drafted by Cambodia’s Defense Ministry, the Head of Vietnam’s ADSOM WG spoke highly of the ministry’s efforts in building the documents. He hoped that the draft joint statements of the 16th ADMM and the ninth ADMM+ proposed by the Cambodian Defense Ministry will fully reflect issues of regional concern.
At the conference, Senior Colonel Vu Thanh Van also commented the Cambodian Defense Ministry’s new initiatives for ADMM and ADMM+ in 2022.
On the occasion, Senior Colonel Vu Thanh Van briefed delegates on a plan on realizing the Vietnamese Defense Ministry’s initiative on flying the ASEAN flag beside the flags of ASEAN member states at U.N. peacekeeping missions in 2022.
