This is the first-ever visit to Vietnam made by a German military ship, which is expected to enhance the bilateral defense ties between Vietnam and Germany in general and the two navies in particular.

The welcome ceremony witnessed the participation of representatives of Naval Region 2, the Department of Foreign Relations under the Ministry of National Defense, the Border Guard Command of HCM City and representatives of German diplomatic agencies in Vietnam.

As planned, the ship’s chain-of-command and German diplomats will pay courtesy call on the leadership of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.

FGS Bayern is a Brandenburg class frigate, which has been put into operation in 1996. It is 138.8m long, 16.7m wide, and has a 5,392 ton displacement. It is equipped with numerous modern weapons such as OTO Melara 76mm gun, two Mauser BK-27 27mm cannons, air defense missiles, anti-submarine and electronic warfare systems.

The frigate can reach the speed of 29 nautical miles per hour using air turbines and 18 nautical mile per hour with diesel engine. It can operate up to a distance of 4,000 nautical miles. After leaving Nha Rong Wharf on January 9, FGS Bayern will join a passing exercise (PASSEX) with ships from Naval Region 2.

The People’s Army Newspaper would like to introduce some images at the welcome ceremony for Frigate FGS Bayern.
