Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and her gold medal at the AIMAG 2017

According to Tran Duc Phan, Deputy Head of the General Department of Physical Training and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Head of the Vietnam’s sports team to AIMAG 2017, the Vietnam’s team recorded more medals than the expected number. Despite difficulties, especially the fact that key players had to join the event immediately after coming back from SEA Games with little rest, all athletes tried their best and attained remarkable achievements .

Apart from achieving outstanding results, sending athletes to sport events like AIMAG 2017 also aims at giving more chance for athletes to get more competition experience. Therefore, in the coming time, Phan said, the priority is to send most competent and young athletes to similar events so as to prepare for bigger events like the Asiad or Olympiad.

As for the preparations for Asiad 18, the official shared that the sport sector has planned to revise the whole contingent of nearly 100 participating athletes, and send some overseas for further training. Meanwhile, alternative plans should also be outlined. The target is that Vietnam would bring home several gold medals at the upcoming Asiad. Challenges and difficulties are still ahead; therefore, there must be early and best possible preparations.

At the AIMAG 2017, Vietnam’s sports team snatched 13 gold, eight silver, and 19 bronze medals, landing in the ninth place on the medal tally for 65 teams. Taking the lead is the host Turkmenistan with 89 gold, 70 silver, and 86 bronze medals, followed by China (42 gold, 32 silver, and 23 bronze medals) and Iran (36 gold, 23 silver, and 59 bronze medals).
