“Red address” on Son Ca Island
PANO – From this Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday on, troops on Son Ca Island (Truong Sa district island of Khanh Hoa province) will have a new and significant address to visit and learn more from tradition, which is the General Vo Nguyen Giap Park built right by the pier to the island.
The park features an arc of wall running behind the statue of General Vo Nguyen Giap, on which 300 historical images and items made of terracotta are hung. The images and items are chronically arranged, telling the story of the general along the history and resounding feats-of-arms of the Vietnam People’s Army in the two resistance wars against foreign invaders. The left of the wall has on it images of the establishment and development of the Navy, including images of Uncle Ho and General Vo Nguyen Giap with naval troops.
The General Vo Nguyen Giap Park - “Red address” on Son Ca Island
Studying the images and items, Sergeant Nguyen Trong Toan of Combat Section 3 said, “We, the troops of the present time, promise to try our best in training and working to firmly safeguard the sacred national territory and maritime sovereignty, deserving to be successors of the shining example of General Vo Nguyen Giap.”
Apart from the important historical images and items, the statue of General Vo Nguyen Giap calmly facing the sea empowers the troops on the island to overcome any difficulties and challenges in safeguarding the nation’s seas and islands. The statue is a trenchant and indisputable territorial claim of Vietnam over the Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands.
The park is decorated with green trees and other items that make it a more solemn and beautiful scenery. Lessons on the national territory are also taught here via the display of vivid documentary images. Colonel Vu Duy Khanh, Political Commissar of Son Ca Island shared, “Apart from more than 300 items and images on the wall, we are keeping a good number of maps and historical exhibits here to serve the education of tradition, evoking patriotism and revolutionary heroism among the troops. The park is really a ‘red address’ for troops on the whole island.”
