Natural “pearls” of the sea on Hon Khoi
PANO - Hon Khoi (Khoi Islet) in Ninh Hoa town, Khanh Hoa province, is not only a well-known tourist destination but also famous for having the largest salt fields in central Vietnam. Salt making has long been an integral part of local life.
Traveling along the coastal road from Ninh Tho Commune to the wards of Ninh Diem, Ninh Hai, and Ninh Thuy in Ninh Hoa Town, visitors can easily spot large salt mounds, neatly piled and covered with tarpaulins, drying under the sun in the fields.
The salt-making season runs from January to July each year, with the ideal time for harvesting falling between April and June, when intense sunshine helps the salt dry faster and become denser, resulting in large, firm, flavorful white crystals.
As the sun rises and its rays reflect on the salt fields, the sparkling grains of salt shimmer like natural pearls from the sea.
