In his speech, Hoang Dinh Chan, a director of Hung Viet Cancer Hospital, said that cancer has been on the rise in recent decades. In Vietnam, the number of new cancer cases reached 126,000 in 2010 compared to 68,000 cases in 2000 and is estimated to exceed 189000 in 2020.

Chan also added that more than 95,000 people in Vietnam die of cancer yearly, higher than those dying of HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Sadly, WHO listed Vietnam in the list of 50 countries in Top 2 of the global cancer atlas.

He emphasized the misunderstanding of cancer and shortage of information about cancer prevention and early cancer screening, resulted in low rates of cancer treatment and cures. He also stressed the importance of cancer prevention and raised awareness of the public of the disease.
