The Department of Transport in Ho Chi Minh City is urging contractors undertaking drainage projects within the city limits to speed up construction and complete the works well before the onset of the rainy season this year.

The contractors have been asked to pay more attention to the dredging of the canals and rivers.

Once complete, the new drainage system will be connected to the existing system so as to cope with seasonal flooding that occurs each year due to heavy rains and high tide.

Construction units should not allow their ongoing works to hamper the flow of the existing drainage system, worsening the flooding conditions.

District people’s committees and the Steering Centre for the Urban Flood Control Program should focus on dredging the current sluice system so that they can effectively drain out the floodwater. Any person encroaching over rivers and canals will be dealt with appropriately by authorities or penalised.
