The August Revolution remains an enduring epic of resilience and the burning desire for independence and freedom in the heart of every Vietnamese. The victory was the culmination of years of struggle, from Nghe Tinh Soviet movement and the uprising against Japanese occupation, to the building of armed forces and revolutionary bases. When the rare “once-in-a-thousand-years” opportunity arrived, the nation answered the call with a single determination to liberate itself by its own strength.

The victory of the August Revolution marked a great turning point in the nation’s history. From a life of slavery, the people rose up to master their own destiny and their own country. That triumph also affirmed a shining truth that even a small nation, if it has a correct political line, a brilliant leader, and great national unity, will certainly defeat every aggressor. The August spirit transcended national borders, resonating across five continents, becoming a powerful source of inspiration for oppressed peoples to struggle for independence and freedom.
From the flame of August, the nation went on to write further glorious chapters, namely the Dien Bien Phu Victory that “shook the world” and the Great Spring Victory in 1975 that “drove out the Americans and toppled the Saigon regime,” bringing about national reunification. In today’s process of renewal, the spirit of the August Revolution continues to shine, empowering the entire Party, people, and military to overcome challenges and achieve historic accomplishments.
On this journey, the Vietnam People’s Army, founded and trained by the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, has always been the vanguard and loyal force. From its origins as the Vietnam Dissemination and Liberation Armed Team, the military marched in step with the nation, making important contributions to the success of the August Revolution. The tradition and spirit of the historical August remain deeply etched in the hearts of generations of officers and soldiers, inspiring their determination to build a revolutionary, regular, elite, and modernized Vietnam People’s Army.
As the country is commemorating the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2), every Vietnamese understands more deeply the priceless value of independence and freedom, and more clearly the responsibility to preserve, enrich, and carry forward the revolutionary achievements handed down by the forefathers. Now more than ever, let us join hands, overcome all hardships, kindle aspirations, and remain resolute in building a prosperous and happy Vietnam.
