GS’s chief pays tribute to former Party, State, military leaders
PANO - On July 14, in commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the Wounded Soldiers and Martyrs’ Day (July 27, 1947 – 2026), a delegation of the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense, led by General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff (GS) and Deputy Defense Minister, paid tribute to former Party, State, and military leaders.
In a solemn atmosphere, General Nguyen Tan Cuong and the delegation respectfully offered incense to commemorate former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu; former State President Le Duc Anh; former defense ministers: General Vo Nguyen Giap, General Van Tien Dung, General Doan Khue, and General Phung Quang Thanh; former Director of the General Department of Political Affairs General Chu Huy Man; former chiefs of the General Staff and former Deputy Defense Ministers: General Hoang Van Thai, General Le Trong Tan, and Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Khac Nghien; and former Deputy Director of the National Defense Academy Lieutenant General Nguyen Hai Bang.

General Nguyen Tan Cuong and the delegation expressed profound gratitude for the immense contribution of these predecessors to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, as well as the building of the Vietnam People’s Army. The GS's chief also inquired after the health of the former leaders’ families, expressing his hope that they would continue to uphold their family traditions and contribute to the country’s development and the military’s growth.

On the same day, General Nguyen Tan Cuong visited and extended health wishes to General Pham Van Tra, former Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Party Committee (now the Central Military Commission) and former Defense Minister; General Ngo Xuan Lich, former Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission and former Defense Minister; and General Do Ba Ty, former Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, former Chief of the General Staff, and former Deputy Defense Minister.

Following his visits, General Nguyen Tan Cuong briefed the former leaders on the outstanding achievements of the whole military in the first half of 2026, along with key tasks currently being directed and implemented by the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense.
The general wished the former leaders good health, hoping they would continue to monitor and provide valuable feedback to help build a stronger Vietnam People’s Army, firmly safeguarding the nation’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
