Fallen soldiers in Gac Ma battle commemorated solemnly
PANO – A solemn ceremony was held on March 14 in Khanh Hoa province to pay tribute to naval soldiers who sacrificed their lives to defend Gac Ma (Johnson South) Reef in Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago 34 years ago.

The event took place at the Gac Ma soldiers’ memorial site in Cam Hai commune of Cam Lam district, Khanh Hoa province, with the participation of representatives from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, the province, veterans, and local residents.
They recalled the glorious fight and expressed profound gratitude to the soldiers who died for the nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, affirming that the sacrifice will always be a bright example for later generations.

Reportedly, on March 14, 1988, 64 naval soldiers laid down their lives while safeguarding Gac Ma Island to protect the national sovereignty over sea and islands.
A statue at the site depicts the image of the soldiers holding each other’s hands to form a circle that symbolizes their immortal fight for the country’s sovereignty.

The Gac Ma soldiers’ memorial site was built on an area of 4.5 ha and has been open to public since July 2017. Annually, on this occasion, tens of thousands of people arrive at the site to pray for the heroes and wish them rest in peace.
