After four days of massively raiding Hanoi and its vicinity, receiving fierce counter-attacks from Vietnamese troops and people, and experiencing heavy losses, the U.S. Air Force reduced their operations in Hanoi, starting December 23.

In daytime, U.S. tactical aircraft bombed the outskirts of Hanoi 54 times. At night, B-52 bombers flew 33 sorties to drop bombs on Dong Mo (Lang Son) and Bac Giang. Fighters were also deployed to bombard Yen Vien, Giap Bat, and Da Phuc in Hanoi and Noi Bai and Yen Bai airports. Meanwhile, tactical aircraft of the U.S. Navy conducted seven sorties to bomb Kien An Airport and other areas in Hai Phong.

On December 23, 1972, Vietnamese troops shot down four U.S. aircraft, including two B-52 bombers.
